In three seasons under head coach Vinny Del Negro, the
Los Angeles Clippers have a 128-102 record, including two consecutive playoff
berths. This season, they set a franchise best record with 56 wins. The
Clippers also won their first Pacific Division title in 2012-13 and last season, advanced
to the Western Conference semifinals. Del
Negro also led the Clippers to a franchise-record 17-game winning streak this year.
The future is looking up (finally) for the Los Angeles Clippers. Del Negro must
be doing a good job. After all, this season was the Clippers best.
But in the world that is the National Basketball Association;
sometimes best is not good enough. According
to a report from Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports!, the Los Angeles Clippers will
not retain head coach Vinny Del Negro for next season despite the considerable
success and progress made under Del Negro’s watch.
But when you are coaching multi-millionaire athletes,
you are not the boss. It doesn’t even
matter if you are a millionaire, too. How many coaches has Dwight Howard gotten
rid of? The Clippers desperately want to
resign All-Star point guard Chris Paul long term, as he is set to enter free
agency this season. First off, Del Negro
was never tremendously popular with either the fans or the media, and there
were concerns about his rotations and rudimentary offensive system following
him from Chicago.
And secondly, Paul didn’t much like him. This coupled with their first-round loss to the Memphis Grizzlies
this season must have sealed Del Negro’s fate.
